A local father has been hailed as a visionary in the field of parental delusion after mistaking his daughter’s total cognitive shutdown for a sudden mastery of the Samoan language.

The self-described “unpretentious” intellectual was stunned when his nine-year-old responded to a dinner query with a series of guttural vibrations he assumed was a rich Polynesian dialect rather than typical pre-teen contempt.

Psychologists suggest that the parent’s desperate need for a gifted child caused him to hallucinate linguistic depth in what was actually a vocalised eye-roll.

The girl’s mother remains unimpressed by her husband’s discovery.
